School Profile

General information

Christ's Hospital is an independent school and charitable Foundation with a remarkable history. Established in the City of London by King Edward VI in 1552, but now located on 1200 acres in West Sussex, Christ's Hospital is a place of unique history and still proudly retains many of its distinctive traditions, including the famous 'Bluecoat' uniform. The School's mission, which is to provide first class educational opportunities to students from all backgrounds, giving preference to those in need, contributes to its success as an outstanding educational institution and a genuine microcosm of modern society.

Examination Results and Achievements

This summer (09), at A2 Level, just under half of all grades awarded were As. Many pupils have now gone on to Russell Group universities or top universities overseas. At GCSE, 95% of the grades were A*, A or B and 80% were either A* or A grades. This year group's strong showing overall was underlined when they were placed 12th nationally amongst co-educational schools by The Times.

During 08/09, Christ's Hospital pupils have represented England or the UK in Chess, Maths and Rugby and a number have competed at national level in Squash and Athletics. The range and quality of music has been outstanding and many of our pupils have been engaged in charitable endeavours either locally, nationally or in Romania or India.

Specialist subjects

The curriculum is designed to encourage pupils to study subjects in each of the major areas of the National Curriculum. Further opportunities are offered particularly in Languages, the Creative Arts and the Humanities. Notably, Christ's Hospital's pupils enjoy unrivalled music facilities with a superb teaching faculty drawn from London and the South East.

Sports

Pupils at Christ's Hospital explore sporting interests in both a competitive and more recreational setting. Boys play competitive Rugby, Soccer, Hockey, Cricket, Basketball, Fives, Tennis, Squash, Swimming and Athletics. Fixtures for girls are organised in Hockey, Netball, Rugby, Tennis, Swimming, Squash, Athletics and Rounders.

In addition, an extensive afternoon programme of Games and activities includes Badminton, Volleyball, Judo, Aerobics, Weight training, Cross-country, Trampolining, Fives, Fencing and many other options.

Co-curricular

Over 60 Clubs and Activities are available some afternoons and at the weekends. A huge range of sporting and musical opportunities is augmented by other clubs including Art, Astronomy, Chess, Combined Cadet Force, Cookery, Community Action, Cycling, Design & Technology, Drama, Duke of Edinburgh, Gardening, Human Rights, Riding and Venture Scouts.

Fees/Bursaries/Scholarships

Christ's Hospital is a unique independent school and charitable Foundation which enables children from all backgrounds to achieve their full potential. Currently, the majority of places are financially assisted by the charitable Foundation; contributions are assessed according to income.  There is also an opportunity for a limited number of academically able students to join Christ's Hospital through Direct Entry places for pupils whose parents can afford to pay an all-inclusive fee without the usual means-testing. These boarding and day places are available for entry at age 11, 13 and 16 subject to candidates meeting the required academic standard. All applicants sit academic assessments.

Through the generosity of donors, and investments over the centuries, Christ's Hospital remains one of the last and largest truly charitable schools which continues to fund considerably more places than any other independent school in the UK.
