Clifton College

School Profile

Clifton College is one of England's most famous independent schools. Founded in the mid-Victorian era it has always enjoyed the reputation of being at the forefront of education in the UK. The school is superbly located in what has been described as 'the handsomest suburb in Europe' and now offers continuity of boarding and day education for boys and girls from 3 to 18 with the natural points of entry being 7+, 11+, 13+ and 16+.

Academic excellence, magnificent buildings, superb sporting and cultural facilities, a pioneering spirit and a high level of pastoral care in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere characterise the Clifton of 21st Century. The structure, ethos and timetable are very much those of a boarding school, and the vast range of activities and opportunities reflects this.

Clifton has a very strong reputation in sport, music and drama. Our girls' hockey teams have been County champions at all levels for the past five years and our netball team reached the National finals last year. In boys' sport the traditional games of rugby and cricket are strong but pupils also excel in a very wide range of other team games and individual sports. Music making is of a very high level and the majority of pupils in the school have tuition in one or more instrument. The school has its own working theatre and the standard of performance is exceptional.

Boarding accommodation has been greatly improved and modernised over the last few years and comfortable study-bedrooms are provided, the majority with broadband internet access points. The expansion of the Sixth Form, which began in September 2007, has been accompanied by a range of improvements in the social and dining facilities for our older pupils. Clifton accepts a large number of new pupils into the Lower Sixth Form each year and the benefits of our links with industry, commerce and the two universities in Bristol makes Clifton the ideal choice for those looking for a secure but challenging transition between school and university.

Clifton aims to produce confident and qualified young men and women who leave the school ready to take their place in the wider community. Within 15 minutes' walk from the school campus is the centre of one of England's most civilised cities with its universities, cinemas, museums and art galleries and such incomparable cultural benefits give Cliftonians a sense of being part of the real world.

Bristol is very accessible from London and the rest of the UK, being close to the M4/M5 motorway intersection. Heathrow and Gatwick airports are served by direct coach links, Bristol has its own international airport only 15 minutes from the school and high-speed trains reach London in 75 minutes.

Academic standards are high and excellent teaching and learning has been commented on by recent school inspections. Clifton sends 10 - 20 pupils each year to Oxford and Cambridge Universities, and the vast majority of leavers enter the university of their first choice.
