School Profile
Haileybury has been one of the country's leading boarding schools for nearly 150 years. From earlier generations we have inherited a large and beautifully appointed site of 500 acres situated within easy reach of central London to the north and Cambridge to the south. Haileybury offers a stimulating academic and cultural environment for 750 boys and girls aged between 11 and 18. Following the British curriculum, we offer both the GCSE and IGCSE system up to 16, after which pupils in the Sixth Form can choose between A Levels or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
History
In 1806 the Honourable East India Company commissioned William E Wilkins (later the designer of the National Gallery, of Downing College, Cambridge, and much of the University of London) to plan the buildings for its new training college for civil servants for India. On an area of empty heath, not far from the manor of Hailey, Wilkins created his buildings in a neo-classical style round a large grass quadrangle (still said to be the largest academic quadrangle in the land) and here the East India College flourished for 50 years. Four years after its closure in 1858, Haileybury opened its gates once again, this time as a public school. In 1874, a Haileybury housemaster was appointed the first headmaster of the United Services College at Westward Ho!, which later moved to Windsor and became the Imperial Service College. In 1942, Haileybury and the ISC combined to become "Haileybury and Imperial Service College", now known as Haileybury.
Academic Excellence
While Haileybury is a selective school, we also recognise the need for all-round achievement and believe our pupils' abilities reflect this great breadth. Results at both GCSE and Sixth Form level have increased dramatically in recent years and our flourishing academic reputation is reinforced by the fact that we now lie at Number 28 in The Times league tables. Haileybury introduced the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in 1999 and it has been wholeheartedly embraced by both staff and pupils alike. In 2006, our 116 pupils achieved an average points score of 35.05 out of a possible 45, with 56.1% of Higher Level entries achieving a score of 6 or 7 out of the maximum of 7. Class sizes through the school are small and the tutor system plays an enormously important role. Responsibility for monitoring an individual's overall progress, both academically and in other respects, falls to the housemaster or housemistress and to the tutor. Tutors meet very regularly with the pupils for whom they accept a special responsibility, discussing progress as reported by subject teachers and identifying areas that need to be developed.
Boarding
Haileybury's commitment to boarding focuses on community values and on developing responsibility and independence. The majority of pupils joining the Lower School (aged 11 - 13) arrive as day pupils but are offered opportunities to sample the boarding experience on a flexible basis, while entrants into Main School (those aged 13+ and including those transferring from the Lower School) join one of 12 boarding houses.
Sporting Prowess
Haileybury has an enviable sporting tradition, with numerous pupils representing county, regional and sometimes national teams. We recognise the importance of sport as a vehicle for healthy living, as an opportunity to engage in and learn from competition, as well as a means in itself for fun and fulfilment. Our outstanding facilities include a newly laid all weather hockey astro turf pitch, an indoor swimming pool and sports hall, as well as acres of playing fields for rugby, cricket, lacrosse, athletics, netball and others.
Music, Art and Drama
The Arts at Haileybury continue to thrive, with strong teaching in all three disciplines.
Every week our choirs and musicians perform to both internal and external audiences, with a major drama production and several exam performances taking place each term as well as annual Cabarets, House Drama Festivals and Shakespeare in the Park.
Art pupils explore the use of a different medium through etching, painting, drawing, construction, carving, modelling, printing, sculpture, textiles and ceramics, and experts from the world of art often give talks and demonstrations of their work.
