Lancing College is one of the country's leading independent schools for boys and girls aged 13 to 18. Set in 550 acres of beautiful Sussex downs, west of Brighton, Lancing College was founded by Nathaniel Woodard in 1848.

The school has a proud history with many famous former pupils including lyricist Sir Tim Rice, playwright Sir David Hare, former British Ambassador to the United States Sir Christopher Meyer and novelist Evelyn Waugh.

Lancing College is famous for its impressive 150-foot high Victorian gothic Chapel. In memory of another distinguished former pupil, anti-apartheid reformer Bishop Trevor Huddleston, a new stained glass window has recently been installed.

Exam results are one of Lancing College's key strengths. The school has been in the first division for many years and in 2005 was ranked 17th for A Levels results nationally. Lancing is among the leading co-educational schools in Sussex.

Students are accepted following an academic entrance examination. A range of scholarships and awards is available for academic, musical, dramatic, artistic and all round stars of the future.

Whether boarding or day, pupils join one of eight houses, sharing working and sleeping areas in small groups and progressing to single rooms. Most pupils join the Third Form (Year 9) or the Lower Sixth (Year 12). Pupils from Europe, Russia, Ukraine, the Middle East, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, Korea, Indonesia and America have all studied successfully at Lancing, but the majority live within a fifty mile radius.

Lancing College Farm Project provides for students wishing to develop their agricultural, veterinary and conservation interests. The daily working farm of sheep, rabbits, poultry, goats and pigs gives students practical experience as well as teaching farm administration.

Besides academic study, pupils are involved in activities that include football, rugby, tennis, squash, badminton, basketball, fives, hockey, running, riding, clay pigeon shooting and sailing. Lancing competes successfully against many local schools and clubs.

The school offers a 200-strong Combined Cadet Force with Army and Royal Air Force sections as well as a Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.

Music and drama also play very important roles in school life. There are two theatres (one open-air) and regular productions for all age groups. Lancing has a strong tradition of choral and orchestral music, with large numbers of pupils receiving instrumental tuition.

Lancing College remains a member of the Woodard family of Church of England schools. The school has recently appointed Jonathan Gillespie as its 18th Head Master.
