Our Foundation
Lord Wandsworth died in 1912 and left a large sum of money in trust to be used for the education of children who had lost one or both parents and who needed the pastoral support of a boarding environment. His trustees purchased the site on which the College now stands and the first Foundationers entered in 1922. These pioneers were all supported by the Lord Wandsworth Foundation (from which they took their name) and worked on the estate as well as at their books. The College become a fully-fledged independent school in 1945 when the first fee paying pupils were introduced.
Although the pupils' links with farming have now gone, the Trust's 1200 acres of farmland enclose the campus and provide a striking and cherished feature of the overall environment.
The work of the Foundation still continues to this day and is central to the LWC ethos. A number of new pupils who have lost the support of one or both parents through death, divorce or separation, join the College each year and the presence of these 'Foundationers' contributes greatly to the essential character of the school.
We would be delighted to show you what LWC has to offer your child: please contact us to make an appointment - you will be assured a warm welcome!
