Magdalen College School

School Profile

Magdalen College School was founded by William Waynflete in 1480.

Waynflete, capable, adaptable and diplomatic, rose from unexceptional social origins to become Lord Chancellor under no less than five Kings. After experience of Winchester, school of the country's wealthiest diocese, and Eton, school of the court, Waynflete determined to found something altogether more different and unusual: a school of the university.

Waynflete's new school swiftly exceeded its founder's vision. Early masters established the school as one of the leading centres of learning in Europe, and their pupils achieved signal distinction in a variety of careers.

Today's school is proud heir to these traditions, offering academic, pastoral and extra-curricular provision of the highest order.
