School Profile
Reading Blue Coat School has always set great store by the philosophy that a good education is much more than a formal academic training. Consequently, whilst regarding the quest for academic excellence as paramount to an effective education, much time and effort is devoted to the nurturing of personalities which are 'well-rounded' and thus capable of coping with the challenges of life both in the workplace and in the family.
Young people need opportunities that will enable them to test and develop their physical and mental skills. They need to acquire sound values, a sense of social responsibility and qualities of leadership. It is our intention to offer these opportunities to our pupils not only through the academic curriculum and the extra-curricular programmes but also through the moral codes that underpin the everyday life of the school community.
The School was founded in 1646 by Richard Aldworth, a merchant of London and Reading, and a Governor of Christ's Hospital. Originally known as Aldworth's Hospital School, the school was established near St Mary's Minster Church in Reading to provide 'education and bringing up of 20 poor male children'.
Today his school is thriving, with 670 pupils (boys 11-18,girls 16-18) purposefully engaged in developing their enormous potential, on our beautiful 44 acre estate in the village of Sonning, on the bank of the River Thames. This school thrives on positive relationships, ambition and inspiration. Please come and visit us to see for yourself.
