School Profile
'We think we are a leading school because we make a difference: our students enjoy a rigorous, rounded IB education in an international environment, and leave us as independent thinkers and learners, with outstanding academic results, well equipped for success at top universities in the UK and around the world.'
Sevenoaks School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school, set in 100 acres in Kent. Half an hour from Central London, and half an hour from Gatwick International Airport, we are situated on the edge of Sevenoaks, overlooking the 15th century deer park of the Knole Estate. The school was founded in 1432 by William Sevenoke and is one of the three oldest lay foundations in England.
We are a selective school, and welcome enthusiastic pupils ready to get involved in all the opportunities we offer. The Sunday Times ranked Sevenoaks as the top co-educational independent school in the country in 2007-8, and Sevenoaks topped The Times and The Independent league tables in 2006.
There are 990 pupils in the school, including international students from over 40 countries. Boarding is an important element in the school's life and ethos. There are about 340 boarders and 640 day pupils.
Sevenoaks has a reputation for exploring new ideas. We have taught the IB for 30 years and were the first HMC school to offer the IB Diploma Programme exclusively when we dropped A levels in 2005. Our two international boarding houses and our closeness to the Channel and international airports have given the school a broad European and worldwide outlook.
A wide range of subjects is offered at GCSE, and we have recently introduced the IGCSE for Maths and Science. Our academic results are excellent, with an average IB Diploma score of 38.68 points in 2008 (world average around 30 points). Over 87% of the examinations taken by GCSE candidates are awarded A* or A grades. In the last three years 114 students were offered places at Oxford or Cambridge and an increasing number choose to go to Ivy League and other top American universities.
There is a strong emphasis on the co-curriculum, which encompasses sport, music, drama, art and all the activities, societies, events and trips which the school offers alongside the academic curriculum. It is an integral and essential aspect of the education we offer. This emphasis on a rich and diverse co-curricular programme throughout the school is based on the conviction that individuals thrive in an environment in which all of their abilities and talents are recognised and nurtured. A variety of clubs and societies provide opportunities for all pupils to find and develop their interests. Pupils are also involved in community service.
