School Profile
The celebration of individuals and individual talent is central to education at Shrewsbury - both in and beyond the classroom. In whatever sphere, a pupil will find a member of staff to support and encourage, enthuse and inspire him or her to exceed their expectations and meet the challenges that lie ahead with confidence and good judgement. Set above a gracious curve of the River Severn, amidst what Sir Neville Cardus described as "the most beautiful playing fields in the world," Shrewsbury is a school of about 380 boys in the first three years, and 290 in the Sixth Form who will be joined by girls in September 2008.
Life at Shrewsbury is founded on a close partnership between staff, parents and pupils to promote the strength of family life, foster responsibility, and balance the claims of developing individuality with the needs of a vibrant community. To make this ideal a living and working reality, the School cares for its pupils in Houses - currently nine for boarders, two for day boys; from September 2008, Sixth Form Girls will be accommodated in their own brand new purpose-built House. The Housemaster, supported by an assistant, a matron and a team of tutors, is therefore a crucial figure, giving sound advice when necessary and encouraging pupils to a rich and varied life at Shrewsbury.
Our aim in the classroom is to enthuse and inspire pupils from across the ability range. In the last three years, on average, 20 from about 130 leaving boys, have gone on to Oxford and Cambridge and virtually all to the university of their first choice. But there is as much joy for the less academic pupil who surpasses his expectations as there is for the pupil whose progress to top grades always seemed more certain.
We want all our pupils, whatever their ability, to enjoy their sport. We compete internationally in cricket and rowing, and we are one of the strongest schools in the country for football, cross country running and fives; facilities and coaching for these and a host of other sports including tennis and swimming are excellent. Our school plays and musicals have drawn praise at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in London, and as one would expect from one of the strongest music departments in the country, the breadth and quality of music-making is remarkable, culminating for our orchestral players with our annual concert in St. John's Smith Square.
For these reasons, therefore, The Good Schools Guide describes Shrewsbury as "One of the strongest boarding schools in the country....truly a connoisseur's choice."
